Possessing Eternity and the Pursuit of Greatness
God did something absolutely startling when he created you and me. According to the Bible in Ecclesiastes 3:11, He put eternity in our hearts.
What does that mean? Does it explain the yearning that all of us have, at one point in our lives or maybe most of the time, for something better than routine living? Is this why there our minds dare to wander and to dream about doing big things and leaving a mark in this world before our time is up?
I think it is not only a possibility, but a certainty that you and I have been made to be someone of significance, someone of greatness.
But greatness isn’t defined by the standards we see most of the time. Greatness is not fame, or having a lot of money, or even being in a political position of power. Really, those things are ok, good at best. I think greatness is all about being who you were meant to be. It’s about fulfilling the role for which you were made.
And we all have different roles to play. Not all of us are intellectuals. Not all of us are concert pianists. Neither will all of us play the part of doctor, lawyer, or philosopher.
Men and women only become truly alive when they embrace what God meant specifically for them to be and follow through, with trust, on the blueprint he has laid out for their lives.
I would also go on to say that the Church only becomes what it’s supposed to be in this world when everyone is operating on the cylinders that God built within them.
I guess this is all important because God has made us eternal beings and He wants us to leave eternal legacies. But we can only do that when we embrace the plan that He had for us while we were still a glint of light in the eyes of our parents.
Live for today like eternity depended on it. Because it does.
