Maybe It Will Take More Than The Word Of My Testimony….

I just finished reading an article from the PAOC Leadership magazine, “Enrich.” They interviewed renowed author Ravi Zacharias on the subject of “Defending Christianity In A Secular Culture.”
I’ve heard of Zacharias before but I need to confess that I have never read any of his books. My wife, who is an avid reader and loves to read books without pictures, unlike her husband, said that she attempted to read one of his books and found it difficult to get through. Not because it was bad, but because there was so much in it.
In my own admitted laziness, I haven’t tackled any of his writings. But I thought a magazine article was a good place to start.
My spirit was glad I did, but my flesh winced a bit.
In the article Zacharias outlines the very real challenges which are facing the Christian church today, challenges which, he writes, we have ill prepared our youth and young adults for. In his article he goes on to say that our college and university students are being led like “lambs to the slaughter” for the lack of equipping they are given to deal with very strong offensives against their faith.
I was encouraged in myself that I was able to read the article and understand what Zacharias was talking about. Simply put, with clarity, intelligence, and grace, he shares how pastors, who he feels for greatly, need to put in the hands of their parishoners able arguments and rebuttals to the issues that arise from within the classroon as well as the lecture halls and the marketplace.
And this is where my flesh winced. Becaue I realized that I needed to embrace this challenge myself so that I actually have something to give to others.
In regards to Apologists - those who defend the faith in the intellectual arena - Tony Campolo has always been one of my favourites. His passionate approach to truth is inspiring to watch (when he speaks) or to read (in his books). Like Zacharias, Campolo makes sense of Christianity and confirms the belief in our hearts with unshakable data for our minds. Maybe I should pick up one of his newer books, or re - read something from him like “Partly Right.”
So, which book of Zacharias should I delve into first? Be kind. I know I should be farther along this way. Do any of his books come in cartoon form? Let me know…
